To Believe, What Does that Mean ?

To Believe, What Does That Mean???

What does “BELIEVE” mean in John 3:16? My daughter has been seeing this time on various clocks for a couple months now off and on and I’ve seen it a couple times too. At first we were thinking the Holy Spirit was just comforting her/us with this verse but today my daughter says, mom, what does believe mean in the Greek and I said I didn’t know but that I’d find out so I googled it. (Greek was the language that the first Bible translation into English came from.) Here’s what I found…

‘ The Greek word, PISTEUO, means “to believe.” The Greek word for believe is “to believe to the extent of complete trust and reliance on,” “to have confidence in,” “to entrust,” “to have committed to,” “to rely on,” “to enjoy confidence,” and even “to obey.” ‘

I found that “to believe” had a little more meaning than what I had originally believed most of my life. Learning about God and His word is a life long process and is never really complete in this life time, but I believe when we get to heaven we will still be learning things and we will have the best teachers around because they will be the people who were originally inspired by the Holy Spirit/God to write his word down for the rest of us to learn from.

‘ Some teach that all we must do is to believe the facts about Jesus, but that is not the meaning of the Greek word. We must not only believe the facts about Jesus, but we must also “rely on” and “yield ourselves to” Him. True faith or true belief is faith that depends on Jesus, our God, to forgive our sins just as He said He would. It also includes an acceptance of the fact that Jesus will take control of your life. A believer will follow Jesus or in other words become His disciple.

Romans 10:9 – King James Version (KJV)…That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

One who believes, accepts Him and receives Him. Receiving is the result of faith.

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Hebrews 5:9) …Once Christ obtained His human perfection, He became the source of eternal life. Eternal life is given to those who obediently accept the gift given to them by God. (Promise for Oct 17th)
